How Does the Dose of Far Infrared Delivered by Saunas Compare With the Dose From Sunbathing?

Hi

I have been reading about Far Infrared saunas. I’m wondering what dose of Far Infrared they deliver over, say, 30 minutes, and how that would compare with the dose of Far Infrared I’d get from spending 30 minutes sunbathing in the Australian summer sun instead?

Thanks.

If the only source of heat in the IR sauna is from the radiation (specifically, if the air temperature is comparable to that of Australian summer) then you can use your own sense of skin heat to compare them. Which is too bad in a way, because my tiny physicist mind wants to think up a way to use Planck’s spectral energy formula, the area and temperature of the IR radiator, and solar irradiation data to make an ironclad comparison formula. I’d guess the saunas are about the same as beach life, or who’d want to use one? And they’re probably adjustable.
P.S. You refer to the exposure as a "dose". It’s not harmful like X-ray or UV radiation, you know. Coming near anything hot, like a woodstove, subjects you to the same far-IR radiation.
